Chapter 22

Linda was deep in concentration at her laptop as she hammered on the keyboard, pressing each key harder than the previous one, hoping her words would be captured more efficiently. She had nursed a single cup of tea for nearly two hours, but the staff was too fearful of upsetting their squatter to dare to confront her. It wasn’t worth the aggravation when she was one of only three customers. She had been pleased with her work. Her editor was nervous but enjoying a surprising spike in visits to their website, even if the physical circulation remained unmoved. Advertisers on the Mersey Post’s website were growing in importance to the paper and its financial position. A successful and intriguing story, even with the remotest of links to their little part of Merseyside, helped bring traffic to them. But it wasn’t just her editor she was eager to please, but her father. The little feedback he had sent her way was full of praise. Whatever was happening with DS Walsh, she was doing her part, and she couldn’t worry about what Ian was fucking up. She wanted Jim to suffer, to feel pain, both physical and mental. She had little doubt the bastard was psychologically broken. Everything he had was being ripped away from him. She had wanted him to suffer, and he had. It had been her idea to stage his public fall from grace and play his own mind against him before making those close to Jim his enemy. The only thing he had left was his life.

It would be hard for them to take that from him now.

Kerry entered the small cafe calmly. She was fed up. Any anger she had experienced had already faded away. Billy had done the legwork but could not find her booked into any hotel on the island. Pat had been all too happy to rack up a favour owed by sharing that Miss Jones spent a lot of time at a small cafe not too far away. When Kerry arrived, she told Billy to head back to the station or take a few hours at home if he needed a break. He had been hesitant to leave her, but she was walking into a greasy spoon to meet a journalist, not raiding a drugs den with just a baton and a stab vest. He was happy to return to headquarters and try to steal an hour of sleep if he could. Kerry spotted the small makeshift office immediately.

Linda didn’t look up, concentrating on her work. Kerry walked to the counter and ordered herself a coffee, before joining Linda unnoticed. She sat opposite the reporter and watched her work for a good minute before Linda looked up, agitated. “What do you want?” she snapped.

Kerry stared at her for a moment. “I guess I should say world peace. Maybe an end to hunger and starvation. But I’ll be honest, I just want some sleep and for things to return to normal.”

“Normal? You’ve been working with a murderer.
